views from nonsofia's 'temporary exhibition' by georgi dimitrov (b. 1980) consisting of oil painting, pencil drawing and digital media work produced over the past 15 years. all stages of dimitrov's development as a visual artist, i.e. mystic, metasymbolic and orthogonal (all the way to the invention of the arcangle), are marked in this show – financially supported by the national culture fund of the republic of bulgaria.
concrete, constructive or reductive, non-objective art is mostly about expressing ideas through excluding natural forms or symbols. with a function to educate society in terms of new moral values and spirituality, its momentum became apparent in the years between the two great wars of the previous century. spreading across various visual forms, industrial design, typography, music and architecture, mainly in europe, america, australia and new zealand, non-objective art has almost no tradition in bulgaria. its presence, as part of the local art scene, is growing but is also relatively small these days. since its creation as an online platform in 2010, nonsofia has been aiming at increasing the popularity of non-objective and constructive art in bulgaria by reflecting on nonart events or artefacts.
as of 2012, nonsofia has been legally registered as the first ever non-profit entity to offer institutional support for non-objective art in bulgaria. making nonart aesthetics recognisable within bulgarian social context and bringing bulgaria onto the world map of non-objective art are among the association's primary goals.
in 2022, thanks to the considerable support of the national culture fund of the republic of bulgaria, nonsofia achieved one of its bravest goals, namely, the creation of its own physical space – an educational centre for geometric abstraction with a gallery, library and archive. and thanks to the heartfelt support of fondation gottfried honegger and mr gaudenz b. ruf we were able to extend our activities through 2023.
